In Ecuador, two yellow pitahaya ecotypes are grown: “Pichincha” and “Palora”. It is a cactus plant, and as such very resistant to droughts.
Its production is concentrated in the Palora canton, province of Morona Santiago, where in 1968 the producer Félix Miguel Zabala found a wild cactus from which a beautiful flower was born, which gave a fruit called “Pitahaya”, and which turned out to be of a pleasant flavor
Producing, growing and exporting bananas generates 1.022 jobs nationwide.
Currently around 20.785 tons of pitahaya are produced.
The main export markets are Hong Kong, United States, Canada, Singapore and France.
